What are PAHs?


PAHs, or Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, consist of hundreds of separate chemicals that occur together as mixtures.  PAHs are naturally occurring and are concentrated by the burning of fossil fuels and the incomplete burning of carbon-containing materials (such as wood, tobacco, and coal).  PAHs are also a wide and varied group of compounds whose sources include tire particles, leaking motor oil, vehicle exhaust, crumbling asphalt, atmospheric deposition, coal gasification, and parking lot sealants, as well as sources inside the home (such as tobacco smoke, wood fire smoke, grilling or charring meat). PAHs are also commonly found in particulate matter of air pollution and tend to adhere to surfaces, attaching readily to sediment particles and leading to elevated concentrations in sediments. PAHs have complex chemical structures, so they do not break down easily and are persistent in the environment.

Why should we be concerned about PAHs?
Some PAHs are known to be toxic to aquatic animals and humans. Generally, higher molecular weight PAHs tend to be more stable, persist in the environment longer, are less water soluble, and are more toxic. Exposure to UV light can increase toxicity of PAH compounds and increase toxicity to some aquatic species. (Garrett 2004) Scientific studies have documented detrimental impacts from PAHs on aquatic organisms. Examples include: 
• In Austin, Texas biological studies revealed a loss of species and decreased number of organisms in streams with PAHs present (Van Metre 2005)
• In Puget Sound, Washington’s Ambient Monitoring Program (WA DFW) found PAHs were associated with:
– Liver lesions and tumors in fish,
– Liver problems leading to reproductive impairment,
– Malformations in fish embryos and embryonic cardiac dysfunction,
– Reduction in aquatic plants (eelgrass) that provide fish habitat.

The most significant effect of PAH toxicity to humans is cancer. Increased incidences of lung, skin, and bladder cancers are associated with occupational exposure to PAHs (USDHHS 2009). Other non-cancer effects are not well understood, though they may include adverse effects on reproduction, development, and immunity. PAHs generally have a low degree of acute toxicity to humans, meaning harmful effects through a single or short-term exposure are minimal. Mammals absorb PAHs through inhalation, contact with skin, and ingestion (EPA Ecological Toxicity). Recent research by USGS raises concerns about exposure of children through inhalation and ingestion of house dust contaminated by PAHs that have abraded from nearby parking lots sealed with coal tar sealant (Mahler 2010).

Effective April 1, 2011, The Town of Boone requires permits for the application of pavement or asphalt sealants within the corporate limits of the Town of Boone and within the Town of Boone’s Extra Territorial Jurisdiction. 4-H Fruit Plant Sale


Ordering for the Watauga County 4-H Fruit Plant Sale is now open.   Proceeds help support youth programs in Watauga County.  Supplies are available at a first-come first ordered basis.

Plants available include blueberry, strawberry, blackberry, raspberry, and heritage apple trees. The plants are bare root, which means they do not come in potted soil.  This allows the plant to be sold at a lower cost.  For those who do not want bare root plants, we have two varieties of blueberries in 1 gallon containers.

Winter Crops Production Workshop: 2/25/13


North Carolina Cooperative Extension & High Country Local First co-host a Winter Crops and Season Extension Field Day in Glendale Springs (Ashe Co.), NC: Monday, February 25, 2013, from 2:00 PM – 6:30 PM.

On Monday, February 25, from 2 PM to 6:30 PM, North Carolina Cooperative Extension will lead a Winter Crops Field Day on producing specialty vegetable crops for winter harvests in the High Country region using High Tunnels and other Season Extension strategies. The Field Day will be held at three neighboring farms: Blue Ridge Organics, Berry Patch Farm, and Appalachian Trees.  

The Winter Crops Field Day will include a discussion of vegetable varieties suitable for market production during the ‘off-season’ with no added heat. Patryk Battle of Living Web Farms, Richard Boylan of NC Cooperative Extension, and host-farmers Alan Hanson, Hollis & Jay Wild, and Wayne & Jeanne Berry will lead the Field Day. The day’s speakers will jointly address issues of fertility, weed-management, insect-management, disease management, timing, and harvests. Participants will have the opportunity to scout growing crops at each of the three farms.

The Field Day will begin at 2:00 PM at Blue Ridge Organics Farm, located at 182 Calloway Gap Rd., in Glendale Springs,NC. There, farmer Alan Hanson will showcase his greenhouse production that combines vermicomposting chambers with vegetables such as mache, lettuce, and chard, plus a high tunnel with a selection of both winter vegetable crops and soil-building cover crops. The second stop of the day will be at nearby Berry Patch Organic Farm, where Wayne and Jeanne Berry will discuss their winter production efforts, from growing carrots in gutters, to starting organic seedlings under lights, and more. The day will conclude at Appalachian Trees, where Hollis & Jay Wild will demonstrate how sustainable soil management and succession plantings keep their unheated high tunnels yielding vegetable harvests throughout the winter.

Workshop co-leader Patryk Battle will bring his more than thirty years of organic growing experience to the event. He works as Head Gardener for the Mountain Air Community Garden. Some may have heard him as one of the passionate hosts of WCQS’s “In the Garden” show. Others know him through his Burnsville farm – Pat and Carl’s Organics – or through the sustainable farming program he teaches at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College. He has also worked as Head Gardener at the renowned Highland Lake Inn in Flat Rock, North Carolina, and recently helped to found Living Web Farms, where he presently teaches sustainable agriculture. New Micro Loans Through Farm Service Agency


The Farm Service Agency (FSA) developed the Microloan (ML) program to better serve the unique financial operating needs of beginning, niche and the smallest of family farm operations by modifying its Operating Loan (OL) application, eligibility and security requirements. The program will offer more flexible access to credit and will serve as an attractive loan alternative for smaller farming operations like specialty crop producers and operators of community supported agriculture (CSA). These smaller farms, including non-traditional farm operations, often face limited financing options.

Microloans can be used for all approved operating expenses as authorized by the FSA Operating Loan Program, including but not limited to:
Initial start-up expenses;
Annual expenses such as seed, fertilizer, utilities, land rents;
Marketing and distribution expenses;
Family living expenses;
Purchase of livestock, equipment, and other materials essential to farm operations;
Minor farm improvements such as wells and coolers;
Hoop houses to extend the growing season;
Essential tools;
Irrigation;
    • Delivery vehicles.

The application process for microloans will be simpler, requiring less paperwork to fill out, to coincide with the smaller loan amount that will be associated with microloans. Requirements for managerial experience and loan security have been modified to accommodate smaller farm operations, beginning farmers and those with no farm management experience.

For annual operating purposes, microloans must be secured by a first lien on a farm property or agricultural products having a security value of at least 100 percent of the microloan amount, and up to 150 percent, when available. Microloans made for purposes other than annual operating expenses must be secured by a first lien on a farm property or agricultural products purchased with loan funds and having a security value of at least 100 percent of the microloan amount.

Eligible applicants may obtain a microloan for up to $35,000. The repayment term may vary and will not exceed seven years. Annual operating loans are repaid within 12 months or when the agricultural commodities produced are sold. Interest rates are based on the regular OL rates that are in effect at the time of the microloan approval or microloan closing, whichever is less.  Contact Gay Isaacs at the USDA Farm Service Agency at (828)264-3850.

Volunteers Plant Buffer in Bethel

Appalachian State University Students got involved with water quality protection this winter when they installed 500 live stakes along Rubes creek in Bethel.  This was part of the Watauga River Partners grant they received in 2011 to improve fishing and water quality in the Beaverdam Watershed.  Collaborating with the Watauga County Cooperative Extension and Watauga County Soil and Water, the Watauga River Partners are working with landowners to fence livestock out of streams, plant native plants along the creeks, and provide alternate watering sources, and other agricultural best management practices on farms in the watershed.

Live stakes are cuttings from native plants that will grow into beautiful shrubs providing habitat, shade, and bank stabilization for years to come.  Since Rubes creek is a designated trout stream, temperature moderation is very important.  These plants will not only provide shelter for wildlife but also cool mountain water for the trout.   For more information or to get involved with river protection contact the Watauga River Partners at www.wataugariverpartners.org or contact the Watauga County Cooperative Extension, Wendy_Patoprsty@ncsu.edu, or Watauga County Soil and Water Conservation District Brian.Chatham@watgov.org

Backyard Stream Repair Workshop

Is your backyard stream washing away? Here's your chance to learn more about sustainable backyard stream-repair solutions to reduce erosion and return stream banks to a healthy, attractive state. Attendees will have the opportunity to watch, ask questions, and even install plants that stabilize and beautify a stream bank.
